So glad to see the update, sounds good! It seems very positive that they cleared her from a heart standpoint for the surgery. Hoping for good toe results!

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

Quick update:
- The cancer in the toe seems to be limited to the small area of the tumour, though they said it's possible there are floating cancer cells that could be detected in the lymph drain area (armpit), which they could use a fine needle procedure to collect and test. With this test, there's no saying that cancer wouldn't show up later even if it's not there now. If cancer cells are found, a referral to an oncologist for chemo would be next.
- Trying to keep a protective cover on a lab's foot in cold, wet weather can be rage-inducing. After several prototypes and failures, I've found that electrical tape spiraled around a nylon bag works - make sure the tape wraps below and above the upper paw pads!
- After the surgery the vet clipped all her claws except on the foot that was operated on, so now the claws are very long and Sophie is limping. We go back tomorrow for removal of the stitches and they will clip those nails.
Can this all just please be over with...

How much longer will you need to protect her toe? I dog sled and bikejor with my dog and if the conditions are really icy, I put booties on him and they stay on really well. They have a stretchy Velcro strap that goes around the top and keeps them secure. I get them from dogbooties.com.

DOGS ROCK!!!

Thank you, I'll check into those!
The vet said that since the hair will take awhile to grow back and the skin in the area is tender, with winter about to hit, etc. I will need to cover that foot for about another month. The nylon bag I've been using is wearing out so I do need to find a better solution, but can always temporarily fall back on wrapping her foot with t-shirt material and covering that with a couple of grocery bags secured with electrical tape. It's not ideal, but it works.![]()
