Looking forward to reading a lot of the insight that the members here have. Family is getting a new black lab in July and wanting to learn as much as possible from everyone. I've had dogs in the past just never a lab. My kids are super excited and looking forward to the new puppy. It will be their first dog. My wife had a small dog but was never their dog. They are 15 and 11 and the perfect age to play and teach the new puppy.

    Thanks
    Shannon

Hey, Shannon...welcome to the board. The excitement is going to be building (for you/your family as well now for us here). Search around, ask questions...we're a friendly bunch (and we love pictures)....good bit of experience here. Did I mention we love pictures? 😁

My best advice is patience. And lot's of it. Lab puppies can be a real handful, they bite, they chew, they jump and they get into everything. Start training day 1, and set the rules, boundries and limitations. I promise all the hard work will pay off, and in a year or two, you'll have a great dog!

A tip from my Vet, take lots and lots of pictures. Puppy is going to grow up way faster than your kids.

    Welcome and congratulations!

I will only second what others have said about puppies having boundless energy that will require a lot of patience and training. I don't know how old your "step puppy" is but the first few months will probably be the most challenging. My kids were probably close to that age when we got our first lab, after having had dogs of other breeds since they were born. The lab puppy was an eye-opening experience. Your kids should be prepared to have little shark teeth to contend with until the adult teeth come in around 4-5 months. My kids got very upset when their favorite yoga pants got teeth or toenail tears, and I had a few specific items of clothing that I just designated as my dog clothes. Every puppy is different but labs are notoriously mouthy as pups. My current 2 were not as challenging as the first lab, maybe because they had an older dog to torment or play with, maybe because I had a better idea of what to expect. It will be fun and challenging! We will look forward to hearing more and seeing lots of photos!

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”

We finally got our puppy a couple months ago. She is doing great and we love her to pieces. She spends a lot of time sleeping. Real smart and loves training and playing with the family. First pic is when we just got her. Second was a couple days ago.
